About Lahar

Lahar means wave.

Music moves through a room like a wave, and through a city the same way. We started in an old house in Lazimpat with three teachers and a borrowed piano.

How we teach

Songs first. Theory when it helps.

Most people quit music because the first months are dull. We start with a song you love and bring in reading, scales and theory when they make that song better.

  • Both traditionsWestern notation and the sargam, side by side.
  • Instruments at the studioPractise here before you buy. We help you choose a good first instrument when you're ready.
  • A report every termParents get a short note on what was learned and what's next.
The instruments of home

Madal, bansuri and sarangi, too.

Many schools only teach guitar and keyboard. We think the madal at every wedding and the sarangi in the hills deserve teachers who grew up with them.

Questions

Parents ask us…

What age can my child start?

Piano and vocals from 6, most others from 7 to 9. Under 6, our Saturday group class is music through games and songs.

Do we need to buy an instrument first?

No. Use ours for the first month. For home practice, a beginner guitar or keyboard is enough. We'll tell you what to look for.

How much practice is needed?

Fifteen minutes a day beats two hours on Saturday. We give a small, specific task each week.

Can adults learn from zero?

Absolutely. About a third of our students are adults, and many of them have never played anything.

What if we miss a lesson?

Tell us a day before and we move it. Lessons missed without notice can't be made up.

Ask us anything

We reply by phone, usually the same day.
